The group split from the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the al-Qaida group in Iraq, and Jabhat al-Jabhat al-Nusra (formed in mid-2011). Originally operated in Syria, then spread into Iraq in 2014. Operates military force, courts, schools and services. The terrorist organisation previously known as ISIL and ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (2013-2014) rebranded itself as Islamic State (IS) on 29 June 2014 when it proclaimed a worldwide Caliphate. Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, known by his supporters as Amir al-Mu'minin, was named as its Caliph (see article 'Iraq crisis' in 'The Independent' retrieved 29 June 2014).
