H Series negatives

Date
1917-1919
Ref
PAColl-5311-3
Description

Comprises a group of negatives inscribed with an initial 'H' character before a running number. Images largely show scenes of war and relating to war on the Western Front. They are attributed to Henry Armytage Sanders, official war photographer of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium.

Also includes a small set of copy negatives of H series prints in albums. The photographer(s) who made the copy negatives is unidentified.

Arrangement: The records for the overall collection of the 'Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association New Zealand official negatives, World War 1914-1918' (PA-Group-00051) were reprocessed by Library staff in Feb-May 2014 in order to improve access to the collection. Series records were created to differentiate parts of the collection. The individual records for the negatives identified as 'H series' were linked to this series description 'H Series negatives' (PAColl-5311-3). The name 'H series' is derived from an 'H' initial character in the identifying reference number written on the negatives.

The images in the 'H series' comprise a wide ranging pictorial record of the experience of New Zealanders on the Western Front from 1917 to 1919. A detailed history of the 'H Series' is available from the essay 'Photographing New Zealanders at War', by Melanie Lovell-Smith, which was published on the Ministry of Culture and Heritage's website (at http://ww100.govt.nz/photographing-new-zealanders-at-war) in July 2014.

Physical Description: Negatives

Processing information: The original H series negative numbers have been added to the Previous ID field for each photograph in PAColl-5311-3. Also included are other Library reference numbers which were formerly applied to the negatives, including a Library created version of the H series negative number which has an extra zero inserted after the 'H' in order to formulate the reference number as an 'H' followed by four digits.
