The cartoon shows a gravestone labelled 'Pike River Tragedy - Dead and buried by management, bureaucracy, and government of NZ.' In front of the graves stone is bottle with a single dead flower and a note saying 'Sorry - Govt'.
On 12 December 2013 the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment dropped charges against Peter Whittall, the Pike River Chief Executive, over the deaths at the Pike River mine. There was no closure for the families of the victims.
