A full-length portrait sketch of a Maori warrior, wrapped in a cloak and holding a taiaha. He stands in front of a whare with decorated gables. The likeness of the man's face, including his moko, to the photograph of the East Taupo chief Te Rangi-tahau in Volume Two of Cowan's account of the New Zealand wars suggests strongly that the drawing is of him
