Heaven: a jack and several jennys
Article on the donkeys that were shipped to Ponui Island in the Hauraki Gulf from New South Wales along with Hereford cattle, pigs and rabbits in 1854. The donkeys were used as farm pack animals and for riding (mentioned are the Chamberlain children who would do a Sunday ride on the donkeys) and are now exported around New Zealand with the Ponui donkey recognised as a formal breed. Included is a picture of the donkeys.
