Summary

Digital reproduction of manuscript fragment, the text remaining is sufficient to identify the complete document as having been listed in the Calendar of Patent Rolls, Richard II AD 1377-1381, 1895, p.379, a royal licence for the alienation in mortmain to the monks of St Mary's Betlesden (presumably Battlesden, Bedfordshire) by William la Zouche, of Harringworth, of an acre of land in Eberton, Gloucestershire, with the advowson of the church there, and by Sir Robert Corbet of the 40 marks rent he received from Hadlee manor.

Collation of original: Fragment cut from the upper left-hand corner of a document. Written in brown ink in an English charter hand.

Decoration of original: Very large initial 'R', 80 x 60 mm, illuminated in blue and gold, with leaf and bud design in brown and green extending along inner and head margins. Decorated letters penworked in red and brown ink above first line of text.

Provenance of original: Bought by E.C. Simpson from A.G. Thomas, catalogue 1 (1957), no.21. The fragment survived as a wrapper, and is inscribed '1594, Pedigree of the Jennings' and '(no.3, Jennings Papers)'; remained in Simpson family following Simpson's death; sold at Dunbar Sloane Wellington auction 22 April 2009, lot 150, purchased by the Alexander Turnbull Library.
