Description

Series comprises papers and photographs relating to the Hitchcock family, from Lavenham, Suffolk, and in particular to the first generation of the family to settle in New Zealand - Clarke Duchesne Hitchcock, his wife Sarah and their 10 children, who sailed on the 'Calypso', arriving at Port Chalmers on 26 October 1874. Includes a shipboard diary kept by Henry Hitchcock (the eldest son) and also a diary written by his future wife, Maria Thompson, who immigrated on the same ship. Series also includes correspondence of Maria's parents (John and Mary Thompson) who emigrated from Ireland to Kangaroo Flat, Victoria, in 1855, and papers relating to the years before her marriage, when Maria taught at Waikouaiti School in Otago. Further material includes collected family photographs, miscellaneous papers relating to descendants of Clarke Duchesne Hitchcock, and a statement dated 1891 (with no provenance) by Patara Ngungukai on the subject of eating human flesh.
