Originally the Capitol Theatre, it was purpose built in 1928 to screen silent films. In 1932 the cinema was converted to screen 'talkies', the last theatre in Wellington undergo conversion. The cinema operated until 1964, and was then converted into a shopping centre. In the early 2000s it was purchased by Camperdown Studios who restored it as a cinema, and reopened it as a cinema on 1 April 2011.
