Folder contains the scripts for several debates in which David Smith participated as a member of the Victoria University College Debating Society: `John Hampden' (Smith won the Plunket medal with this debate in 1908), `General Gordon', `The evolution of law', and `That the creation of small navies should be encouraged in the self-governing states of the Empire'. Includes a letter from J B Reid.

Also includes a certificate (mounted on cardboard) from the New Zealand Competitions Society 1st Annual Festival 1911, Town Hall Wellington: Certificate of Merit, First Prize awarded to Victoria College Debating Society for impromptu debate - "Are women more intelligent than men".
