1843 - 1863
Fox, William, 1812-1893; Duppa, George, 1817-1888

Six men standing around a pit being prepared with large logs. Five of the men are holding sticks behind two dogs facing one another at the edges of the pit. Another man is holding back a third dog while another places a log at the edge of the pit. Haystacks are faintly outlined behind the group beyond a low fence

In one of George Duppa's sketchbooks. The sketchbook contains three other sketches by William Fox, and a larger number of sketches by Duppa. Attributed to Fox on stylistic grounds, but it could also be the work of Duppa. If drawn by Fox, it could be located at Duppa's first pastoral run in Waimea, near Nelson in the 1840s, or it could be at Amuri around 1860
