Treasure hunter Bill Day holding coins recovered from the ocean floor near the Auckland Islands, taken ca 10 May 1996 by Evening Post staff photographer Phil Reid.
In 1996 Bill Day led an expedition to the Auckland Islands to recover artefacts from the wreck of the General Grant. Day did not find the wreck but did recover coins and other artefacts believed to be from another wreck.
