Description

Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1870s to 1880s, many by unidentified photographers, with several being taken by James Bragge. One that is clearly by Bragge shows his named carriage "J. Bragge. Photographer. Lambton Quay, Wellington" in a photograph taken on the road on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill (on page 18).

The first fourteen pages show views of the Pink and White Terraces, each from varying angles. These are followed by views of Ohinemutu.

Many of the photographs are unidentified, including one of a meeting house with a group of Maori men, women and children in front. Painted on the maihi are the words "Mauimua Mauiroto Maui", painted fish and Maui in a boat fishing.

On page 26 is a photograph of a painting, possibly by Charles Blomfield, showing Lake Rotomahana with the Pink Terraces on the right and the top of the White Terraces in the foreground, beside which there are two men.
