- Fox, William (Rt Hon Sir), 1812?-1893
Shows a tall carved gateway on the left, with a group of Maori centre and a pataka (storehouse) on the right; Ruapehu and Tongariro beyond lake in distance. The two children in the foreground are holding kete (flax kits) and there is a dog beneath the carved gateway. There is a flagpole in front of the pataka.
There is a watercolour from a similar view, also by Fox, in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia (Ref. no. NK 564). A European traveller is shown in the Australian watercolour, the groups of Maori are different, there is a cooking fire in the centre foreground, flax baskets in front of the pataka, and the pataka is facing the viewer. A photograph of the Australian watercolour is in Drawings & Prints, under the same title as the Alexander Turnbull Library's watercolour.
