View along the Waipa River, a tributary of the Waikato, with the stern of the paddle-steamer Waipa above the water, its bow and part of its two paddle-wheels beneath the water. A man is standing on the back of the boat. Two tents can be seen on the right bank and a cabbage tree is on the left bank
The Avon (its name later changed to Clyde) was used for troop movements during the Waikato wars
