Description

Photograph taken by the studio of William James Harding, Whanganui, probably between 1870 and 1884. Depicts the first Chavennes Victoria Hotel owned by Charles Chavannes in the process of demolition, a pile of timber and a cart is sitting on left of the frame. To the right of the hotel is a horse drawn cart. The wooden hotel building on the corner of Maria Place and Victoria Avenue appears to be flanked by two wings of the second Victoria Hotel.

Descriptive information is taken from the Negative register and inscriptions on negative. Further information of the construction of the second Victoria Hotel on the site is taken from 'Wanganui Herald', Volume XIX, Issue 5448, 11 October 1884, Page 2. "Mr C. H. Chavannes, of the Victoria Hotel, is having a building put up in which he will have two spacious sample rooms and 5 bedrooms." Date information is taken from Ben Schrader, 'Historic places - Colonial ideas and practice', Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, http://www.TeAra.govt.nz/en/photograph/42116/rebuilding-chavannes-hotel (accessed 11 June 2021).
