On the victory dias for the new Zealand general election, the leader of the National Party, Jim Bolger, stands in first position but as second lowest, the leader of the Labour Party, Helen Clark, stands in second place but third lowest and the leader of New Zealand First, Winston Peters stands in third place but in the highest position. The leader of the Alliance Party, Jim Anderton, is a baby in a pram beside the dais.
The 'mixed member proportional' electoral system put Winston Peters and his party in a strong bargaining position when it came to the two major politicial parties trying to find coalition partners.
