Description

Clearing in the centre of the pa, with groups sitting, standing and one man beating something on a stone, a woman cooking inside a whare and several dwellings inside the palisades. Wellington Harbour in the background.

The accompanying text reads: Court-yard in the pa, or native village of Pipitea. This is the centre of the town of Wellington. It affords a very fair representation of the wretched dwelling places from which the natives are recommended by their Official Protectors never to remove.
