Description

View of part of a Wellington bomber and the wing section damaged by a shell and fire. Also shown are holes kicked in the fabric of the fusilage and wing by Sergeant James Allen Ward who managed to smother the fire with an engine cover. Photographed by an unknown photographer.

For this act "of most conspicuous bravery" Sergeant Ward was given the VC, but he was killed in action over Germany two months later.
