Description

The cartoon shows Pita Sharples, Co-leader of the Maori Party. He holds a dripping pen and is about to sign the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He says that they are strongly committed to human rights... it's just that some people have more rights than others. Text above reads 'Government accused of secretly signing the UN's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples'. In a second version the words 'Human writes!' appear at the bottom of the cartoon and in a third version the above text is replaced by 'Government UN-turn' and 'The pen is mightier than the sword' but the word 'our' is inserted before 'sword' and the 's' is crossed out so that it reads 'The pen is mightier than our word'. Pita Sharples went secretly to New York, with the blessing of the PM, to sign the declaration. John Key, the Prime Minister, had earlier been against the signing of the declaration. There is a wordplay on 'rights' and 'writes' and 'u-turn' and 'UN (United Nations) turn'.
