A wicker basket with two soldiers perched on the edge is being lowered by rope into a waiting boat with five men on board. Photographed by John Sorensen in 1944.
During the Second World War, New Zealand sent coastwatchers to the Kermadec Islands. As with the Cape Expedition to Campbell and Auckland Islands, many of the watchers were also scientists.
