Men burning and sawing stumps of felled pine trees in preparation for the planting of elms in what was to become Katherine Mansfield Memorial Park on Fitzherbert Terrace in Thorndon, Wellington. Taken by an unidentified photograher in 1932.
Note on back of file print reads: Work on removing pines planted in Fitzherbert Terrace, June 1932. (A related photo was published in the Evening Post, 22 Jun 1933). Work on removing pines had been started in October 1930 at the Murphy Stret end of the plantation. Judging from photographs, elms were planted at that date in the cleared area - see 1/2-089798. Date from Evening Post register is June 1932. Katherine Mansfield Memorial park was laid out on the site.
