Description

Shows two buildings in an open plain, with five horses drawing a covered wagon in the left foreground, a cart drawn by eight bullocks at the right, and five Maori figures and two dogs in the immediate right foreground. Four of the Maori men hold weapons and are dressed in cloaks; the fifth, in the centre, wears a European hat and jacket. The covered wagon has the names "Reynolds & English" along the side. The sign on the right hand building reads "Inverness Store, James Dewar". Near this store is a single horse and cart, a man and two dogs. The left hand building is slightly larger with a verandah, two chimneys, and seven windows along the front. It has an unreadable store or business label facing the corner above its verandah. There is another building at the back of it, and a gas lamp in front.

Location unknown; may not be New Zealand. More likely to be in the Otago or Southland areas with the Scottish name Inverness. Butcher James Dewar, a resident of Cumberland Street, Dunedin, may have been the owner of 'Inverness Store'. James Dewar, his wife and baby daughter were murdered in March 1880
