Polynesian Society

These records comprise administrative records of the Society, including secretary's correspondence and editorial papers, and material collected by the Society relating to ethnological matters.

This collected material includes a large and rich body of ethnological manuscript material collected as part of the Society's library. Also included are deposited papers of Stephenson Percy Smith, the founder and early leading figure in the Society, although, because of his all-encompassing activities, all the early papers reflect his work. Also included are the editorial papers of the New Zealand Institute, dating from the period when Johannes Andersen was active in both organisations.

See series descriptions for further information.

Transfers: Note that MS-Group-0031 (Arthur Samuel Atkinson, Maori letters from Taranaki) was originally part of this group. These papers are also on long term loan and have been digitised..

Processing information: Group currently being reprocessed. This group incorporates the old MS-Papers-1187 collection and a later accession of Polynesian Society records. All items retain their earlier identifiers.
