Description

Porootarao railway station, circa 1910. Two railway guards and a dog stand on the platform. Advertisements for South British Insurance, Arthur Nathan's reliable teas, and DCL scotch whisky, are visible. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber.

Note on back of file print reads "Poto-o-tarao station is on Main Trunk line 28 miles north of Taumarunui. It is close to the northern portal of the long tunnel, 3515 ft, known by the same name. The altitude of the station is 1128 ft. Poro-o-tarao means the butt end of Tarao, this chief with his followers climbed the high hill, now pierced by the tunnel. The name is really a little jest of his men, as they climbed in single file, after Tarao."
