Bound at the beginning of the volume is a typed letter from W F Gordon to the Under-Secretary Internal Affairs dated New Plymouth, 19 Dec 1924 referring to the contents of the ms etc. At the end of the volume is a newspaper cutting on the death of Will Fox, native interpreter who, as a child was captured at te Ngutu o te Manu and afterwards adopted by Sir William Fox. Mrs D'Alton was guide to Lieut-Colonel Thomas McDonnell in 1868 and the information contained in the ms was obtained from a series of letters written by her
