Description

A Samoan man, woman and two children with canoe in the left foreground, watching a row-boat reaching a pier in the right foreground. The boat holds 6 Samoan rowers and a party of Europeans, including three women and two men. The women are shaded with parasols and there is a red ensign flag in the stern of the boat. Further out in the water are several other row-boats and canoes and a large European steam ship, with a white hull, is moored in the deeper water. A bank with palm trees is in the background.

The artist, an American by birth, was married to R.L.Stevenson's stepdaughter, Isobel. The couple lived in a cottage next to R.L.Stevenson and his wife in Samoa for some years. They were later divorced.

Exhibited 'Va'aomanu' exhibition celebrating the history and culture of Samoa, based on the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library, held in the National Library Gallery, 1 March to 28 June 1998.

Other Titles - Countess of Jersey Lady Margaret Villiers, and Captain Leigh, Mr Bazett Haggard steering.

An inscription on the reverse identifies the British present as Lady Villiers, Captain Leigh and Mr Bazett Haggard steering the boat. Bazett Michael Haggard was British High Commissioner in Samoa in the 1890s.
