In 1897 Chilton House School, a private boarding and day school for girls, was founded on The Terrace, Wellington. In 1918 Hutt Girls' School Ltd established an Anglican private school for girls, Chilton St James School, in Lower Hutt. When the Chilton House School closed in 1930, Chilton St James School purchased their goodwill, and incorporating the name into the school.
