Nicholas Rowe was born in Wanganui in 1861. His father arrived in New Plymouth on board the `Essex' in 1843 and began flaxmilling in the Lower Rangitikei area in 1870 until 1874 when he set up a sawmill on Rowes Line (just south of Sanson). It appears that Nicholas Rowe was also involved with this milling operation and later became a farmer in the area.
