American born photographer John Hammond Ashton resided in New Zealand between 1948 and 1954. He permanently moved to New Zealand in 1960 to live and work in Wellington.

Finding Aids: A finding aid for this collection has been created by staff. Library reference numbers assigned to negatives have been annotated on a copy of the job lists created by Ashton for his business. The finding aid is kept in the Photograph Archive working tools library and is available on request..
Processing information: Originally arranged and described in 2002 as 22 PAColl records which represent the photographer's original organisation of negatives by year. The negatives are stored in order of Library reference number assigned to that negative format.
The negatives themselves have not been fully described. Access to the images can be made via the staff finding aid.
The collection reference number changed from PAColl-7208 to PA-Group-00381 in 2009.
