- Description
'From Te Kapa's kaik' on the left, drawn across the page, is a view across a valley towards hills, with the small buildings of the kaik or village in the foreground. Below that 'Te Morokuia' (or Te Morokina?) is a view of a distinctive low hill. On the upper right drawings of three items lost in Mantell's travels: 'Ye candle box [candlestick] wh[ich] was lost atte [at] Otaitai'. 'Ye nyfe [knife]... wh. was lost atte Orewa' and a third object, possibly another knife 'loste atte Godde nos wher' [lost at God knows where]. Bottom right is Mantell's group crossing the Waitaki River in a large canoe, with their Maori guides and their baggage, watched from the bank by a fifth man with his baggage. In the background at the river mouth is a small kainga, with at least one food storage platform.
