Description

Photograph of the demolition of the Tivoli Theatre shops in Molesworth Street, Wellington, showing the sign for Mrs Elizabeth Copeland's tea rooms, taken 1990 by Margaret Barker.

Mrs Elizabeth Copland was already listed as a confectioner at no 33 Molesworth Street when the Crown (Artcraft, Tivoli) Theatre buiding and its shops opened over the road in 1917. No 33 may have been her place of residence as Arthur Copeland, a gardener, is also listed there in 1917.

She ran her tea and supper rooms at no 32 Molesworth Street from a shop in the Crown (Artcraft, Tivoli) Theatre building from 1917 to 1921, afer which she moved her business to 128 Lambton Quay

The Tivoli Theatre was damaged by fire in 1963 and most of the building was demolished. What was retained were the shops along the street. These continued in use until they were closed in preparation for the building of the High Court, and were demolished in 1990
