Description

Shows scene on Hawaii Island, in the gorge of the Wai-Rourou (possibly the Wailuku which flows down to Hilo). Tow men in the centre foreground watch the waterfalls on the river. According to the text in Domeny de Rienzi, French edition, volume 2, page 15, the falls depicted here are the lesser of two falls on the river, being only eight metres high (compared to the higher one of 20 metres high).

Seems to be based on Dampier's "Waterfall in Byron Bay", reproduced in Byron's "Voyage of HMS Blonde to the Sandwich Islands in the years 1824-1825".

Plate 111 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Ales engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Ales).

Similar to engraving at A-282-013, by Sainson, who made many engravings for Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage pittoresque autour du monde", some of them copies from other artists.
