[Postcard]. Tipirere. N.Z.M.E.C. Hokowhitu-a-Tu. [ca 1915].
Shows the words and a line of music for a song entitled "Tipirere". It is the Maori version of "It's a long way to Tipperary". The words are: "He roa te wa ki Tipirere / He tino mamao, / He roa te wa ki Tipirere / Ki taki kotiro. / E noho Pikatiri / Hei kona Rehita Koea. / He mamao rawa Tipirere / Ka tae ahua.
The crest or logo of a Maori group, (the NZ M.C.E. or N.Z.M.E.C.) is shown at top left. This possibly stands for the New Zealand Maori Expeditionary Contingent, but is not an offical army title.
It is suggested that the translation into Maori may have been by Sir Apirana Ngata.
Other Titles - N.Z.M.C.E.
Postcards like this one were handed out to members of the 2nd Maori Contingent of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force after they marched through the streets of Wellington on Saturday 16 September 1915 (See Evening Post, 20 September 1915, page 8). "This " Tipirere " souvenir was issued by National Reserve Headquarters, Wellington".
