Carved pataka (food storehouse) at Maketu Pa, near Matata, Bay of Plenty. Photograph taken circa 1884 or 1885, by Alfred Henry Burton.
Caption to original print reads: "Carved Pataka to keep the food being off the ground - to keep the rats away? No! But to keep the Kehua's or spirits of dead Maoris travelling North to Reinga, from the food and spoiling it."
