Biographical notes supplied at the Joe Bootham 1990 retrospective exhibition refer to a portrait of Peter McLeavey made on board ship to New Zealand in 1961 (See Art Ephemera 1990, Drawings and Prints, Alexander Turnbull Library). This was drawn in a pocket-sized sketchbook and is not the portrait acquired by the Library. The artist and subject met on board ship and became friends from 1962, when McLeavey spent time in Wanganui, where Bootham was living
