Battle scene with groups of soldiers from the Forest Rangers and the 65th Regiment, plus General Cameron and staff, with guns firing and horses, several dead or wounded men, Maori whares in the background and bush and hills. Soldiers are identified by name and the death of General Nixon is shown. The man directing the Forest Rangers is likely to be von Tempsky.
After an original by J.A.Wilson, a witness to the battle, and depicted in this view. A copy of the original and a description of the battle is published in Cowan, J. The New Zealand wars. Vol. 1 p. 345.
Lieutenant McDonnell is likely to be Thomas McDonnell (1832-1899), noted for his heroism at Rangiaowhia. His brother, William McDonnell (1839-1919?) also fought in the New Zealand wars, but in the Wanganui area. Both were sons of Thomas McDonnell (1788-1864) of Hokianga
