See also E-326-f-012-1, a view of French Pass taken on the same day from the opposite side.
The beacon, comprising a barrel attached to a 5.5 metre metal rod cemented to the rock below the water-level, was placed in situ in 1854, by HMS Pandora. It lasted until 1881.
