Description
Collection comprises photograph albums, photographic prints and negatives. These cover most of Alley's life, especially from the time of World War I until his death in China in 1987. These are part of a larger collection comprising Alley's translations of Chinese verse and songs, his own poems, inward and outward correspondence, travel notes, diaries, articles, both published and unpublished, on a large number of topics, speechnotes, and drafts of short stories and of children's books. Inventory with the collection. Three photographs deposited by Jack Body are housed in PAColl-5937-14 Arrangement: Negatives housed at 1/4-085608 to 085912, 086040 to 086807, 105812 to 105821, 180481, 180483 to 180485 Quantity: 87 album(s) Album(s). 342 colour original negative(s) of which 150 are 35mm strips. 728 b&w original negative(s) of which 150 are 35mm strips. 1911 b&w original photographic print(s). 501 colour original photographic print(s) colour original photographic print(s). 3 colour photo-mechanical print(s). 3 photocopy/ies. Provenance: Papers were held at Chinese Peoples Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, where Alley was based, but the building was not suitable as a library. The Association agreed to donate the collection as a symbol of Sino-New Zealand friendship.
