Richard Arthur Northwood (1854?-1926) was born in Sydney and came to New Zealand in the late 1860s to serve as a pharmacist with the Armed Constabulary in the Taranaki Wars. He married Mary Jane Harrison, and their children Arthur James (1880-1949), Richard Alfred (1881-1955) and Charles Hubert (b 1882) were born at Pukearuhe.

In the early 1890s the family moved to North Auckland. Richard Arthur Northwood worked as an industrial chemist in fish factories, and the family settled at Pukenui, on the Houhora Harbour.

Richard Arthur Northwood, a photographer himself, encouraged the interest in his sons, and arranged correspondence courses for them in photography and accountancy. They also worked at fishing and gum digging, and all four held masters and engineers certificates for small vessels.

On 1910 Arthur James Northwood established a studio in Kaitaia, which he operated until his death in 1949. The studio continued to operate after his death, as Highlite Studios.

Richard Alfred Northwood worked as an accountant in Kohukohu where, with his brother Hubert Charles Northwood, he operated from 1910 to 1919 the Northwood Brothers studio. For the next 20 years he managed the Maori Affairs store in Te Kao. In 1941 he joined Arthur James Northwood in his Kaitaia studio.

Hubert Charles Northwood operated a studio in Gisborne in the early 1920s. In 1925 he established the Bellwood Studios in Queen Street, Auckland. In the 1940s this studio passed to Miss Amy Harper.

The bulk of the negatives held by the Alexander Turnbull Library were taken between 1910 and the 1930s by Arthur James Northwood.
