Description

Shows a broad view of European troops attacking a small raised pa from right and left foreground. Two Maori are defending the pa from a trench in the foreground. The pa buildings are on fire and some figures are leaving down the left wall of the pa. The pa is on the middle of a clear area, with a mountain range in the background.

According to the text on the following page, the pa is Te-Ngutu-o-te-Manu, attacked on Friday 21 August 1868 under the command of Colonel McDonnell. Richard Wallace was the first killed in this encounter.
