Description

Watercolour painted by Horatio Gordon Robley, July 1864.

Portrait of NgātiTe Rangi rangatira Te Kuka. Shows a head and shoulders view of Te Kuka sitting and wearing a blazer, pākē (rain cape) and kapeu earring. A pā with whare and taiapa (fences) can be seen in the background.

Other inscription by Robley on the back of the painting reads:

"Portrait in 1864 - he fought in the East Coast campaign - didn't want to be portrayed - I had to give him rum and tobacco for him to sit a minute - he would get up - & sit for more - The crowd of Maori around were expressed astonishment at the tattoo rendered exact- was a carver of repute and did a stick [carving] for [Robley]."

Previous title was transcribed from item, incorrectly identified Te Kuka as 'Te Kuha'.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - "Te Kuha; H G Robley."; Verso - top centre - "Pictured in 1864. as about 85 years old, or more, born about arrival of Capt Cook in N.Z.".; Verso - centre - "Te Kuha Ngaiterangi Chief, later took the the name Te Mea in 1928 (in compliment to Captain Mair)."
