The carved maihi (barge board) and amo (vertical post) of Heretaunga, a carved house at Taradale, probably in the Hawke's Bay region. Photograph taken between 1880 and 1900 by Samuel Carnell of Napier.

Dated from Carnell's use of the dry plate process later in his career.

"Te Maori: Maori art from New Zealand collections" edited by S M Mead (Auckland, Heinemann, 1984) identifies a poutokomanawa figure photographed in front of this house (in a negative held by the Library at 1/1-025857) as being held at the Heretaunga house at Taradale.

"Carved Maori houses of the Eastern districts" by W J Phillipps (Records of the Dominion Museum, vol 1, no 2, October 1944) identifies a photograph of this house (held by the Library at 1/1-025817-G) as "Heretaunga, at Pakowhai, near Napier".
