Description

Head and shoulders portrait of a young Maori woman, on the left. She has short curly hair, an earring and a necklace and is wearing a flax cloak. She is facing a young man, Taiwhanga, later called Rawiri (David), a Ngapuhi chief, who is wearing a tall military helmet and a fringed flax cloak. He has a full moko and is wearing an earring.

Based on two ink drawings by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1824 visit to the Bay of Islands. The original drawings differ in several respects. The title for Etinou is Etinou Jeune fille de la Nouvelle Zelande and she is shown with scars on her shoulder and chest, probably from wounding herself with a shell during mourning. The scars are not shown on the copy. Taiwhanga is called Taifanga, sauvage de la Nouvelle Zelande, chef and there are colour notes - C. P. cuivre clair, tatouage noir tres creux, i.e. skin colour light copper, tattooing black, very deep. He is wearing an army greatcoat as well as the helmet and the helmet sports a feather on its crown. The original drawings are in the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes, Paris. The Library has photographs, negs 116123 1/2 and 116122 1/2.

Chazal's copy was prepared for the engraved illustration with the same title plate 46, to Duperrey's Voyage autour du monde ... (Paris, 1826). The Library has a copy of the engraving, uncoloured, at C-082-101
