Description

The cartoon shows a credit card bearing the words 'APOLOGY, Present this card for instant repentance if any free speech offends you while visiting NZ. "Sorry seems to be the easiest word" Elton John Key'. Text reads 'Multi-million dollar free trade agreement......complete with a credit card from the prime minister. Refers to Russel Norman's protest against the treatment of Tibet by China which resulted in a Tibetan flag being torn from his hands by a member of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's entourage when the president arrived at Parliament. The incident raised valid questions about the right of "free speech" in New Zealand, which arose from an incident involving visits from Chinese officials. China is extremely sensitive to supporters of the Chinese "occupation" of Tibet and to the Falun Gong movement and protests usually trigger strong reactions. The police decided that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate a prosecution of the Chinese officials who manhandled Dr Norman. PM John Key apologised to the Chinese which some critics described as degrading. No-one apologised to Russel Norman.
