[Wilson, H] :First lighthouse at Pencarrow Head, built about 1852. From sketch owned by Mr H Baillie, City Librarian 30 October 1923
A small building resembling a house rather than a conventional lighthouse. It has a hexagonal structure attached to one of two rooms, and presumably the light shone out of the bay windows on five sides of the hexagon. The drawing appears to be a later reconstruction. The walls are of wood and the roof probably of shingles.
Published in Transactions of NZ Institute, v. 55, 1924 p. 704. Article by B Baillie. Copy of sketch by H. Wilson, according to the back of the fileprint for negative 17936 1/2 for this image. The name H. Wilson is not that of a known artist, and it is not known whether H. Wilson was the artist of a sketch from the mid-nineteenth century, or made the later copy.
Lighthouse built 1848 not 1852.
