Description

Photograph of the flightless Cromwell chafer beetle (Prodontria lewisii), an endangered insect native to New Zealand, and specifically to sand dunes around Cromwell, Central Otago. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer in February 1975.

At the time that this photograph was published in the Evening Post (19 February 1975) the population of Cromwell chafer beetles was estimated as standing at 100. They occupied a sandy one acre section in Cromwell scheduled for housing. As a consequence of their endangered status a reserve was created where today a population of an estimated 1000 beetles flourish (estimate dates from 2006).
