Description

Group outside St John Bosco's School, at Nukunonu Island, Tokelau, during the visit of the New Zealand Minister of Island Territories, J Mathison. From left to right: J M McEwen, Mathison, Father Pio Taofanu'u SM (Society of Mary), Sister M St Julienne (who runs the school), and Guy Powles. Shows them standing by the front door of the thatched school house which is set by palm trees, on the waterfront. Photograph taken between April-May 1958, by Mr Clayton for the National Publicity Studios.

Other - Note on back of file print reads: "On Nukunonu Island, 300 yards wide and 4 miles long, the only European is Sister M. St Julienne, of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, who runs the islands's only school is visited by the New Zealand Minister for Island Territories, Hon. J. Mathison, the New Zealand Secretary for Island Territories, Mr J. M. McEwan (left) and Mr G. R. Powles, High Commissioner for Western Samoa (right). Centre is Father Pio Taofanu'u, S.M., Samoan born Catholic priest on Nukunonu."
