Description

Pou tokomanawa (carved posts supporting the ridgepole of a meeting house), probably inside Heretaunga, a carved house at Taradale. Photograph taken by Samuel Carnell between 1870 and 1900.

The figure at the front was part of the exhibition "Te Maori: Maori art from New Zealand collections" that travelled to the United States of America in 1984.

According to "Te Maori: Maori art from New Zealand collections" edited by S M Mead (Auckland, Heinemann, 1984), this figure belonged originally to a house that stood in the vicinity of Pakowhai, near Clive, and was later kept, along with other poutokomanawa carvings, in the Heretaunga house at Taradale.

"Carved Maori houses of the Eastern districts" by W J Phillipps (Records of the Dominion Museum, vol 1, no 2, October 1944) identifies another photograpgh of this house (held by the Library at 1/1-025817-G) as "Heretaunga, at Pakowhai, near Napier".

These pou tokomanawa are the private property of the Airini Donnelly Family Trust.
