Takahe, just after their rediscovery in Fiordland by Dr G B Orbell. The male is in the foreground and female beyond. The birds are tethered for this photograph which was taken 22 November 1948 by Dr G B Orbell, probably near where the birds were found: a glacial valley at the eastern end of the Murchison Mountains, between the Middle and South Fiords of Lake Te Anau.
