Description

Shows a fenced area with nine dwelling houses and a food-storage house. A single large flax is to the right of the buildings, outside the palisade. A stream flows across the view from right to left, emptying into the harbour in front of the pa.

Thought on acquisition to show Pipitea Pa. However comparison with Hilliard's panoramic view of Wellington from the sea (C-012-005) suggests that it shows Te Aro Pa in 1841, viewed from the sea. There is a stream to the right, with a small bridge near the stream mouth, another stream in the distance to the left (probably Waitangi Stream), a single enclosed area with a number of whare, and a large whare or pataka straddling the palisade on the right and towards the rear. All of these features appear in Hilliard's view of Te Aro Pa in C-013-005. In addition, the background hills are shown in the distance, whereas they are closer to Pipitea Pa.

Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
